The Bible warns us that if we do not have self control, we will be slaves to what controls us: Food, lust, money, witchcraft, pornography, friends, life or work or whatever has ahold of you. You fill in the blank.
If we do not take care to maintain our self-control, we will find ourselves with many problems that keep us bound every day. God gave us ALL POWER in Matthew 28:19, so the fruit, (if we use the power) is self-control.
Last night I spoke about picking up your cross daily. Denying the worldly pleasures and learning obedience through things we suffer. Tonight’s self-control is the foundation of a life of carrying your cross. The fruits of the spirit begin with love, add to your love joy followed by peace then patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and SELF-CONTROL. The fruit of surrendering your heart is to be self-controlled and slaves to no one or no-thing. Someone who boasts they are a Christian, yet has no self-control, has not ever surrendered to God long enough to allow the process of change to mold them into this “fruitful person.” Some will tell you that the quality (fruit) of self control, comes just by reading the word of God, but I will tell you, that self-control has to do with overcoming the flesh. The word of God is necessary to strengthen you but you must persevere by carrying your cross, killing every evil thing inside of your body and your thinking by daily decisions or you will not be successful and gain control!
Therefore, I urge you brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, Holy and pleasing to God, this is your true and proper worship.
ROMANS 12:1-2
For the spirit God gave us does not make us timid but gives us POWER, LOVE, and SELF-DISCIPLINE. So when we receive the POWER, it will transform us and we see 2 of the gifts present here. The first fruit of LOVE and the last fruit of SELF-CONTROL.
