John 12:8 NIV
You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”
Back in the book of Deuteronomy 15:11, Jesus commands the Israelites to openly, and with good hearts, give to the poor and needy Israelites in the land. In fact Jesus had given instructions to his people; “Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to.” Deuteronomy 15:10 NIV. In fact he even warned them very sternly and said if you don’t give to them, “they may then appeal to the Lord against you, and you will be found guilty of sin.”
Deuteronomy 15:9b NIV
Now you have Jesus sitting before a large group of people, including Lazarus who was just raised from the dead. Out walks Mary with not only a warm heart full of love ❤️ for Jesus but she came with a bottle of perfume to anoint her messiah before his burial. After pouring it all over his feet and causing the entire house to smell of sweet smelling perfume, she wiped his feet with her hair to show her love for him. He had shown her so much kindness and love. After raising her brother Lazarus from the grave, she was overwhelmed with compassion towards her messiah! Of course Judas, who was used to stealing from the money bag, made a stern comment that that perfume could have been sold and the money given to the poor instead of wasting it on Jesus’ feet! Jesus knowing her heart commended her and told everyone in the room that this moment that she had anointed him was INTENDED to happen so she could anoint him for his burial.
Judas was very upset because it was a year’s worth of wages but Jesus told him, stop worrying about the money and focus on me, your messiah! It was prophesied that I was to come and I am here, don’t miss who I am. This is basically what he was saying. Yes, it is important to always take care of the poor but sometimes, there are more important things we must manage with our time and this time was to honor the Lord Jesus and to prepare him for his soon death!
Our God reigns!!
Blessed be the name of the Lord!
Think on these things.
